Unsung Champions: 40+ Black Pro Sports Photographers and Videographers You Need to Know

Portrait of african-american male photographer taking a photo of himself. Camera lens in focus, man and trees behind him out of focus.

PhotoShelter’s Social Media and Content Marketing Specialist, Jeremy Berkowitz recently interviewed Amanda Cain about what it’s like to be the first Black female professional sports photographer for an NHL team—a major sports league that’s been around for over 100 years.

Amanda said frankly:

“We are still very much lacking from a representation standpoint and it’s not just the NHL, but it’s all sports leagues. Yes, these are male-dominated areas for sure and it dates back to the 1900s, but we are in the year 2022 and we still have single-digit numbers as far as Black women in team sports photography—a couple of handfuls more when it comes to women in general, but not the numbers you should expect, especially in photography.”

Amanda Cain, San Jose Sharks Team Photographer

Our platform was made to help creative teams collaborate, organize, and share their content seamlessly from anywhere in the world—one of our largest client bases is pro sports teams and we help them publish and share their best work in real-time.

So, as creatives who built a platform to help other creatives like ourselves, we believe that creativity itself thrives when people from different backgrounds collaborate to imagine something new or solve a problem.

How is the PhotoShelter team helping?

While there are LinkedIn groups, talent sourcing websites like Hue Community and Diversify Photo, and DEI professionals now hired on staff by the leagues; and they’re all dedicated to bringing Black and BIPOC creatives to the front, we want to help make a change in sports media rooms, too.

We want the incredibly talented Black sports photographers we know to stay booked and busy, so below we’ve compiled a list of over 40 Black sports photographers whose work we admire that a sports organization we know should hire (hint, hint).

We’ll keep doing our research and adding to this list, but don’t be shy — reply to our tweet and shout yourself out or someone you admire!

We're putting together a list of incredible Black pro sports photographers to follow on social and we want to hear from you!

There are so many passionate folks out there changing the game right now. Who inspires you? Let us know.#BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory365 #smsports
